It’s not commonly understood just how different modern food is from the ancient foods our bodies were designed to utilize, or the effects those changes have on the way we think and feel. Studies have documented widespread micronutrient deficiencies, and macronutrient excesses have also been implicated by researchers in the development of cognitive and affective disorders. Participants in this segment will be able to explain:
- eight major changes in modern vs. ancient foods
- how these changes can contribute to psychological disorders

What goes in our mouths has a tremendous influence on what goes on in our minds. Many people intuitively understand this, but finding the facts can be a challenge.
Researchers first began exploring connections between nutrition, cognition and emotion over 75 years ago. In the 1950s this work began to accelerate and by the late 1970s a substantial body of knowledge had accumulated. Controversy dogged the field however as differing political agendas clashed producing confusion and acrimony. By the turn of the century advances in technology began to resolve and clarify the issues, and in the last few years an explosion of research has illuminated this area like never before.

The provision of nourishment is a central family activity. In view of the role meal-time plays in family life and new research making more clear the connections between nutritional factors and mental health, a knowledge of this area enhances the understanding and the practice of marriage and family therapy.
